Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM)
POEM (Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) is an endoscopic procedure used to treat esophageal disorders, most commonly for Achalasia. This technique allows a surgical procedure to be performed without any incisions or the need to enter the abdomen or chest to do the operation.
This is a relatively new procedure and until now was only available in Atlanta at Emory University. Dr. Smith is one of the leading esophageal surgeons in the country and is now offering POEM through the Esophageal Institute of Atlanta.
